Plate 173:  Building a locomotive service yard, Part 39:  the five "E.L.L.Y." columns have been fastened down to the baseboard
(This plate added OCT 2003)

The corner-brackets at the bases of the five "E.L.L.Y." columns have been fastened down, and the bracket screws have all been adjusted to make certain the columns are perpendicular to the baseboard (see Plate 172 for the adjustment method).

The older roadbed in the background has been securely fastened to the two "E.L.L.Y." columns at the rear, in order to align the surface of the older roadbed precisely with the new roadbed of the service yard. The older roadbed has already been supported upon three 4-1/2 columns (see Plate 86), resulting in a total of eight 4-1/2 inch columns visible in this picture.
