Plate 74:  Three combinations of key lighting and fill lighting with the Black Castle
(This plate added APR 2004)

After all the corbels were repaired (see Plate 73), the Black Castle was sprayed with several additional coats of dull black enamel. The three views below, photographed at identical angles, show the fully repaired and repainted Black Castle under three different lighting combinations.

Please perform the following experiment: In each view, block out the left wall of the setting with your hand or with a piece of paper. Observe that, with the removal of this frame of reference, the distance between the Black Castle and the back wall of the setting becomes problematic, especially in the underlighted third view. See Plate 64 for another discussion of this "uncertain distance" effect.
