Plate 64:  Constructing the Black Castle, Part 30: the Black Castle is now entirely black
(This plate added APR 2004)

Five coats of dull black spray enamel have now been applied to the Black Castle. Every exposed surface has been coated with black enamel.

Observe that it is difficult to determine how much distance separates the Black Castle from the rear wall of the setting. In fact, the Black Castle has been placed directly in contact with the rear wall of the setting. The back of the Black Castle is actually touching the setting's rear wall.

The intense illumination of the key light (see Plates 31 and 32 ), a 100-watt floodlamp, throws the back of the setting into deep shadow. This is an illustration of how a lighting arrangement can make the eye believe that it perceives distance where, in fact, there is no distance.
