Plate 264:  The designer is inspired by the sight of a real lock-canal
(This plate added NOV 2003)

On a fine day in September, 2003 the designer found himself in Waterford, New York, near lock 3 of the Champlain Canal, a component of the New York State Canal System. He discovered that, as usual, he had forgotten to take his camera with him, so he scribbled a quick sketch of the lock-gates of a canal drydock. The sketch was made very quickly indeed...the designer had hastily parked his car within a fenced maintenance area which was about to be locked up for the weekend.

The sketch (reproduced here ) inspired the designer with "barge canal fervor". He wouldn't stop bothering the builder until an agreement was finally made to re-design the track plan to allow for a realistic lock-canal.
