Plate 72:  Ballasting in progress, upper level
(This plate added SEP 2003)

In this picture, the high reflectivity of wet ballast can be seen. The recently applied ballast, saturated with the glue mixture, appears almost white. Drier ballast, a darker color, is visible along the track in the immediate foreground. Sheets of newspaper can be seen draped over the lower level roadbed; the newspaper is positioned to catch any drip from the wet glue mixture. Note the masking tape dams on both sides of the roadbed. These dams prevent dry ballast from falling off the edges of the roadbed before the glue mixture is applied.
