Plate 57:  View looking west toward the early construction of the descending spiral roadbed
(This plate added SEP 2003)

In this view, the progress of construction of the descending spiral can be seen at the left, directly above the 1-pound claw hammer. The light-colored square object projecting toward the left (south) just above the hammer is part of a cantilever beam that supports the descending outer spiral. See Plate 83 for a definition of cantilever beams.
