In this view, construction has begun on the descending spiral roadbed at the west end of the layout.
The descending spiral is not supported upon independent columns. Instead, cantilever beams which project outward from the existing upper-level columns, support the spiral roadbed (see Plate 83 for a discussion of cantilever beams). NOTE: The next plate is Plate 57, not plate 56. Plate 56 has been deleted; the absence of Plate 56 does not subtract any essential information from this narrative. |
