Plate 255:  "Separating the powers"

The builder has been constructing layouts for a long time, and consequently has amassed various types of models and equipment (see Plate 54 for an example of some American-style HO models in the builder's collection).

The accompanying picture shows the box from one of the builder's HO train controllers, a Model Rectifier Corporation (MRC) Tech II Railpower 1440 Tru-Sound Integrated Controller. Although this excellent controller is more than capable of managing the entire layout, it is being put to an auxiliary use at this time. We are going to use the Hornby R965 Standard Train Controller to provide the 12-volt variable DC traction current, and the MRC controller to provide power for the accessories, such as point motors and lights.

Although the R965 is capable of providing enough power for all purposes in this layout, the builder has formed a habit of separating traction power from accessory power. The R965 will be dedicated to providing 12-volt DC traction power, and the MRC 1440 will provide low-voltage AC accessory power. The builder prefers to separate the two power sources in order to prevent power dips caused by power-hungry accessories. If a single power source is employed to provide traction current as well as accessory current, a power-hungry accessory can sometimes steal traction current from a moving train, resulting in ungraceful train movement.

The builder does not insist upon this practice of separating the powers, but he does recommend such a separation to any builder who happens to possess extra low-voltage power sources.
