Plate 170:  Building a locomotive service yard, Part 36:  trial-fitting permanent columns under the service yard
(This plate added OCT 2003)

In order to construct a sturdy foundation that provides rigidity for the thin roadbed of the service yard, it has been determined that five columns, each 4-1/2 inches high, must be positioned under the yard's roadbed. In this photo, two columns are placed where the new roadbed joins the existing roadbed under the curved track in the left background. Two more columns are positioned under the wide part of the roadbed at the point where the yard begins to narrow to the throat. Finally, a single additional column provides support underneath the yard throat.

The carpenter's level that lies between the spur tracks helps to weigh down the flexible plywood roadbed of the service yard while the columns are shifted back and forth to ascertain their most effective location.
