Plate 143:  Building a locomotive service yard, Part 9:  the Hornby R394 Hydraulic Buffer Stop
(This plate added OCT 2003)

This is a Hornby R394 Hydraulic Buffer Stop. This device can be fastened down upon the roadbed at the end of a spur track. On real railways, shock-absorbing devices such as this were placed at the ends of spur tracks in major railway terminals, such as the great terminals in London, England.

This model does not contain any hydraulic mechanism; instead, it uses springs to simulate the action of hydraulic shock absorbers. The R394 model is used in our locomotive service yard in the interest of "verisimilitude", as opposed to any expectation that it will prevent derailments due to careless operations.
