Plate 100:  Disguising a surface-mounted point motor
(This plate added OCT 2003)

Because the model point motor in Plate 99 is, relatively speaking, a bulky electrical device that does not resemble an actual piece of scale model railroad equipment, it should not be visible, or it will clash with the otherwise realistic appearance of the layout. One method of making a point motor invisible is to install it under the roadbed, directly beneath the point, where it is out of sight.

--more--
Sometimes, however, there is not enough room under the roadbed to accommodate a point motor, in which case the motor must be mounted upon the surface alongside the point. This is the case for the upper-level right-hand point shown here and in Plate 99.

Observe the rectangular base plate under the point motor in Plate 99. This base plate not only enables the point motor to be mounted upon the surface, but also serves as the foundation for a little 00-scale model trackside hut, which fastens securely onto the base plate and effectively conceals the point motor.

In this picture, we are looking straight down upon the rounded "sheet metal" roof of the trackside hut, which has been fitted upon the base plate. The surface-mounting base plate and the trackside hut are sold by Hornby as item R8015.
