Plate 54:  Constructing the Black Castle, Part 20: how the template for a corbelled battlement was drafted

The paper template shown in the accompanying close-up photo is marked with red and green lines

The solid red lines denote the edges of the curtain wall and the right bastion. The dotted green lines assisted the Artisan in drafting the template.

The template was drafted so that it extends beyond the wall and the bastion to achieve a uniform overhang of one-half inch, thus providing room for machicolations (see Plate 53 ).
