Plate 132:  Adding a souvenir mug to the collection, Part 18: designing a shaped support for the mug
(This plate added OCT 2004)

The preliminary design for the deep center recess in the presentation box (see Plate 128) must now be refined. As represented in Plate 128, the center recess could permit the mug to rotate to the right, permitting the artwork on the front of the mug to slip out of view. This movement could occur because the mug's handle would be free to slide downward into the lower part of the recess, thereby rotating the mug.

The refined design for the deep recess shown above minimizes the possiblity that the mug might rotate. Two modifications have been introduced:
  1. The bottom of the recess now conforms to the mug's cylindrical shape, thereby providing a snug support for the mug.
  2. The mug's handle now rests upon a flat platform, thereby eliminating the possibility that the handle might slide downward due to its own weight.
