Plate 76:  A close-up of a regimental cap badge
(This plate added APR 2004)

This is a zoom close-up photograph of one of the cap badges shown in Plate 75. The photo was taken at 1.2 megapixel resolution without the overhead key light, against a background of black velvet cloth. The lighting consisted solely of 150-watt fill-lighting from the right.

The fill light, striking the cap badge at a low angle, brought out the badge's embossed lettering. At the bottom of the badge is a scroll bearing the name of the regiment:

The Border Regiment
.

Various battle honors earned by the regiment are embossed within the four arms of the Maltese cross. For example, in the bottom arm of the cross, just above the word BORDER is the inscription Relief of Ladysmith, South Africa, 1899-1902. These words commemorate the regiment's participation in the liberation of the town of Ladysmith in Natal Province, South Africa from the besieging Boer forces. The town was liberated, after a Boer siege of four months, by British troops commanded by General Buller.

The circular scroll at the center of the cross bears the name Arroyo dos Molinos, a place in Spain where a victorious battle was fought in 1811 against the armies of Napoleon Bonaparte.
