Plate 91:  "Compass north"
(This plate added OCT 2003)

Layout Rotated

In this view, a compass (actually, a pocket transit used by geologists and field engineers, sometimes known as a Brunton Compass) has been placed upon the baseboard to determine magnetic north. Before this picture was taken, the entire layout had been rotated slightly to provide more room for photography at the previously inaccessible west and south faces.

The second concept model can be seen above the pocket transit. The magnetic needle of the transit is pointing toward the upper right corner of the concept model, which in turn is correctly aligned with the four faces of the layout.

As is evident from the picture, the north face of the layout is now actually the northwest face, but we will continue to refer to it as the "north face".
