Plate 84:  View looking west at the underside of the elevated girders along the south face of the layout

Two horizonal girders support the roadbed at the south face of the layout: the "high-level south girder" and the "mid-level south girder". These two girders are made from furring strips cut to a length of about 55 inches.

The high-level south girder, composed of a single furring strip supported by two columns, carries the elevated roadbed at a constant height of 12 inches.

The mid-level south girder, composed of a single furring strip supported by two columns, carries the outer spiral roadbed at an average elevation of 7-1/2 inches.
