Plate 213:  Constructing "E.L.L.Y." columns in the structural model, Part 9
(This plate added NOV 2003)

The accompanying picture shows the 1-in-12 scale of our architect's ruler moved slightly to the right from its position in Plate 211, representing a shift of approximately one-quarter of an inch (in 1/12 scale). The 8-foot mark on the ruler shows where we should have cut the plywood in the model's baseboard to represent the west face (in other words, we cut the plywood too short by one-quarter of a twelfth of an inch, or 1/48-inch). Fortunately, however, this error has not caused problems, because no previous measurements for the structural model were made from the west face of the layout.

--more--
There is a very good reason that measurements are seldom made from the west face. The west face is so close to the built-in bookshelves in the host room that the builder seldom if ever stands there. This fact is due not so much to the builder's over-inflated spare tire (he's beginning to let the air out, we are pleased to report), but because a lot of junk is piled on the floor near the west face, leaving no room to stand. All measurements up to now were therefore made from the north, east and south faces.

There was an exception to the builder's avoidance of the west face. When he measured the positions of the E.L.L.Y. columns (Plate 209), the builder did take some measurements from the west face (actually, he didn't stand at the west face - he sort of "reached around" from the northwest corner).
