Plate 93:  Looking down at the north face, mid-level: compensating roadbed fitted over the plywood roadbed
(This plate added OCT 2003)

In this view, additional roadbed, consisting of corrugated cardboard strips, has been inserted beneath the tracks that rest upon the original plywood roadbed carried by the lower north girder.

--more--
The reason for the additional roadbed is that the original plywood roadbed developed slight "hills and valleys" due to the tightness of the screws fastening the plywood to the lower north girder, which was not absolutely straight to begin with. To provide for a flat, smooth track foundation, additional roadbed, cut from corrugated cardboard, is glued to the plywood below the track to compensate for dips. After ballasting, the corrugated cardboard will no longer be visible.
