Plate 86:  View looking west at the mid-level roadbed
(This plate added SEP 2003)

In this view, the mid-level roadbed has been extended into a curve near the west face of the layout. This is the new curve that was being contemplated in Plate 67, when some curved track was propped upon stacked boxes of screws and drill bits.

The "Flying Scotsman" has been backed into the new curve, the roadbed of which is supported by three new columns at a height of 4-1/2 inches above the baseboard. The curved track has the same radius as the 12-inch elevated inner loop.

The second concept model is visible at the bottom of the picture. The actual layout is beginning to differ in details from the concept model; for example, the new mid-level curve is closer to the west face of the layout than originally planned.
