Plate 7:  The Hornby “Flying Scotsman” in its foam packaging
(This plate added SEP 2003)

N this view, the Hornby “Flying Scotsman” train is displayed in its foam packaging.

Similar foam packaging, not shown here, holds the track, the controller and a 13-volt transformer. The controller is an electrical device that converts the 13-volt alternating current from the transformer into direct current that is required by the "Flying Scotsman" locomotive.
The Hornby model represents the “Flying Scotsman” locomotive as it appeared when it was first constructed as a Class A1. The locomotive was later converted from Class A1 to Class A3.

The design of the Class A1 locomotive is attributed to Sir Nigel Gresley. Biographical information on Sir Nigel Gresley can be found at the following two web links: click here, and then click here.
