Plate 336:  It's a long drop into the waters of the canal lock
(This plate added JAN 2004)

Here we must use our imagination to see the canal lock. The particle board that is visible beneath the ruler is the water level for the layout. The roadbed of the marshalling yard, at the left, is supported by stacks of books at a height of about 4-1/2 inches (28 feet in 00-scale). The spurs of the passenger terminal are supported by cold-drink cups at about the same height. Imagine yourself standing on the 12-millimeter wide (3-foot wide) footpath at the edge of the marshalling yard, looking down 28 feet, more or less, into the opaque greenish-brown waters of the lock, while a freight barge is being floated to the appropriate level for upstream or downstream travel.
