Plate 17:  The second 1/12 scale “concept model”, first version, north face
(This plate added SEP 2003)

HE second “concept model”, a three-dimensional guide to the appearance of the layout, was constructed from scrap cardboard and colored construction paper. This view of the model shows the north face of the proposed layout.
The masonry viaduct in the background was inspired by various illustrations in the book “Railways and the Victorian Imagination” by Michael Freeman (1999: Yale University Press).

The single-span iron arch bridge in the foreground (to the left of the masonry arch) was inspired by an illustration in the book “Canals and their Architecture”, by Robert Harris (1980: Godfrey Cave Associates). The illustration in the book depicted a 150-foot iron arch bridge, designed by Thomas Telford, spanning the Birmingham Canal.

The second “concept model” differed from the first model in one important respect: the upper loop of track in the second model connects to the lower layout through a gradually descending spiral.

Note also that the upper loop employs a curve of smaller radius than the lower loop. These curves were designed precisely according to Hornby track system specifications provided by Hornby in its technical publications and catalogs.
