Plate 36:  Constructing the Black Castle, Part 2: the entrance arch in an advanced stage of construction
(This plate added FEB 2004)

HE Artisan has now constructed the entrance arch from scrap cardboard. The diameter of the arch is five inches, which is the same as the distance between the vertical supports that hold up the arch at each end.
Since the vertical supports are three inches high (see Plate 34), the height at the center of the entrance arch is therefore the sum of three inches plus half the width (the radius) of the round arch, a total of five and one-half inches.

The arch is set into a thick wall known as the curtain wall (or curtain, for short). The Artisan decided to construct the curtain wall with a thickness of three and three-quarters inches.

I 1/32 scale (the scale of the toy soldiers in the accompanying picture), this dimension represents a wall with a a thickness of ten feet. The Artisan and the Advisory Aesthetician both agreed that this was a reasonable thickness for the curtain wall of the Black Castle.
