Plate 139:  Adding a souvenir mug to the collection, Part 25: crown worn by the Lion Rampant Guardant at 400 percent zoom
(This plate added OCT 2004)

In Plate 138 we showed the lion rampant guardant as it appeared to a computer program called a bitmap editor. One of the qualities of a bitmap editor is that it can act as a microscope, displaying an image at various stages of magnification.

The enlarged image in the picture at the right shows the crown (St. Edward's Crown) which is being worn by the lion rampant guardant. The image in this picture was magnified four times (4x magnification) by the zoom feature of the bitmap editor.

At 4x magnification (known as zoom 400 percent when using the bitmap editor), the thousands of individual colored squares that make up a computer image begin to be visible. These colored squares are known as picture elements, or pixels.
